What is mindfulness and how is it achieved?

Mindfulness is being aware and focused on the present moment. While this may seem like a small and doable task to some people, being mindful is a struggle for many others. It’s easy to get distracted and caught up in your thoughts throughout the day. Sometimes, these thoughts can be so troublesome that they interfere with your sleep, keeping you up at night. This can lead to things like sleep deprivation and other serious health conditions.

Even though mindfulness deals with the mental state, it can be achieved through things you already do in your daily life—exercising, sitting, standing, and moving around. Being mindful can reduce stress and anxiety, as well as give you self and social awareness.

When you practice mindfulness, it is a judgment-free zone. The focus at this moment is creating a natural environment for yourself to understand how your mind works and your thoughts and feelings towards things. This will help you approach future situations in a soft and welcoming manner, for yourself and others. This is how practicing mindfulness meditation can also help the overall well-being of the people around you as well. Creating an atmosphere of mindfulness can help you during stressful times.

Though it is called a walking meditation, that doesn’t mean we’re walking around like zombies with our eyes closed. Instead, we are mindfully walking using a meditative technique, with eyes wide open, a pace that suits us, and our attention on whichever environment we find ourselves in.

It is common for people to first do a sitting meditation in a private space and then go for a walk immediately afterward — with the dog, a partner, or alone — to take that meditative state with them, which is a great way to integrate mindfulness into any walk.

Essentially, walking becomes a tool to familiarize ourselves with the present moment, and we do this by redirecting the mind. Instead of our object of focus being the breath, as we do with a sitting meditation, our focus becomes the rhythm of our gait.

There is no arguing that life in today’s world can be very hectic, from stress of work, to the demands of family life. However, even though we can often find plenty of time to complicate our lives, finding the time to relax and clear our minds can sometimes be somewhat difficult. As many may have already heard, one of the easiest and simplest ways to relax and restart the mind is meditation. While meditation has been medically proven to be effective in reducing stress and helping to relax in a variety of situations. Despite these benefits, though, it can be difficult to find the time to sit and focus in the midst of everything else. Luckily, though, there is a way to get the benefits of meditation without taking a lot of time. Mindfulness is indeed about being fully present and aware of the current moment, which can be challenging for many people due to the distractions and racing thoughts that often occupy their minds.
